Underhill Road Naming

We have recently assessed and sought feedback on whether there is a need to assign a different name to Underhill Road in Greytown and Featherston. The road is split by the Tauherenikau River.

Feedback was sought due to historical complaints NZ Post and Courier Post (NZPCP) received from residents regarding the receipt of wrong mail. NZPCP considers historical issues had been resolved internally.

During the process we also engaged with NZ Police, NZ Fire and Emergency Service, Wellington Free Ambulance and PowerCo. Organisations have adapted to any issues associated with access and the common numbering of Underhill Road in Greytown and Featherston and have not expressed a compelling need for change.

At the direction of the Greytown Community Board, we sought feedback from residents and owners of Underhill Road in Greytown to understand is residents and homeonwers of Underhill Road in Greytown would support a change in the road name, or if there are any other actions that Council could consider taking to provide clarity on the distinction between Underhill Roads in Featherston and Greytown. The feedback period closed Friday 22 April 2022.

Feedback received was presented to the Greytown Community Board on 11 May 2022. The Greytown Community Board resolved to note that as a significant majority of residents and owners along the road did not support a change that the name will remained unchanged as Underhill Road. This is in accordance with the Council’s Naming of Public Roads, Private Roads and Rights-of-Way Policy. We thank all residents and owners who provided feedback to help inform this decision.

The road name in Featherston will also remain unchanged following a decision by the Featherston Community Board.
