Wairarapa Maps are Online
The three Wairarapa Councils have pooled resources to create a new public, viewable, web-based mapping application. The new website shows information about the region’s properties, planning zones and geographic features. It includes recent aerial photography, it is easy-to-use and best of all, it is free.
As a shared service initiative, the three Councils have put together a range of spatial information onto a shared platform, powered by the ESRI GIS application. The District Councils have for many years been using mapping tools and data to manage assets and deliver services within the Wairarapa. Carterton District Council has, for some time, had information in map-form, available from its web site. Now all of the Wairarapa can be seen via one public map viewer which can be found at http://mapping.gw.govt.nz/Wairarapa/. Property information, district planning zones, streets and roads, hazards such as fault lines, tsunami and flood risk areas, transport networks, Civil Defence centres, water and sewer pipes, water races and many more interesting features can now be viewed online.
The Wairarapa Maps viewer has many features that will be familiar to people who use Google Maps or Google Earth. Online help is available for each tool, for those who may want to know more about this site’s many features and services. The layers of information are colour-coded and linked to feature keys. The web site is being hosted by the Greater Wellington Regional Council in another example of co-operation between the arms of local government.
Aerial photography used on this site is less than two years old. The new site will cater for the needs of specialist users, such as urban planners and also for citizens interested in learning more about their community, or people who may be looking at the features of properties they want to buy.
The Greater Wellington Regional Council is launching its own version of the map viewer, covering the whole of the region and including a comprehensive range of public information they hold about the region. Their website address is http://mapping.gw.govt.nz/gwrc/.
