Council-owned land at 57 Fitzherbert Street, Featherston, has been sold to owners of the neighbouring supermarket for commercial development. This is a positive outcome for the Council and the town’s community.

There is an end in sight to Featherston having the vacant lot on its main street. Furthermore, the proceeds from the sale are to be held in the district’s property reserve fund and used for the benefit of the Featherston community.

The mayor Alex Beijen is pleased to finalise the sale process initiated by the previous Council.

“The land sale and plans for commercial development is good news for residents of Featherston. It’s been a long, complex process to get to this point, and I understand it’s caused some frustration to the community.

“Council now looks forward to working with the Community Board, and wider community, on reinvesting the money for the benefit of the community,” says Mr Beijen.

Brad and Rochelle Meikle, owners of Featherston’s SuperValue Supermarket, have various ideas for the land that are still to be finalised.

“We’re delighted to have secured the land. Our development plans are not at a stage we can share just yet, and we really can’t say too much for commercial reasons.

“We look forward to sharing our plans with the community sometime in the future,” says Mr Meikle.
