A fund to help subsidise the travel costs of young sportspeople is open for applications.
The Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund is for South Wairarapa sports clubs and school teams with players 5 to 19 years old who require assistance with transport expenses to local sporting competitions.
The scheme is a partnership between Council and Sport NZ and was developed in response to concerns about the lack of participation in sport by young people living in rural communities.
Feedback from previous recipients has been very positive.
- “With these funds we have been able to provide petrol vouchers to all our registered families to assist them with the substantial cost of getting their children to training and games. For many of them, this can be up to 200kms per week, so every contribution helps.”
- “Students that may not ordinarily be able to participate in sport because of travel restraints can be active members. No one needs to miss out.”
- “Parents are motivated to encourage their children to remain active, and recognition and assistance to enable this is important.”
Applications for the 2022/2023 year close on August 12. Find the application form on our grants page.
