Upcoming 2-night closure of Remutaka Hill for essential maintenance

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists that State Highway 2 (SH2) over the Remutaka Hill will be closed for essential maintenance on two nights, Sunday 9 October and Monday 10 October, from 9pm to 4am the following morning.

The overnight closures will allow road resurfacing, mowing, slip and drain clearing to be carried out.
The addition of Monday night to the previously publicised annual programme is necessary due to the impact the recent severe weather has had on this crucial corridor on the state highway network.

These closures significantly reduce the number of daytime disruptions for road users. Road crews can also complete a large amount of work safely over a small number of closures because multiple crews can work across the hill at the same time without disrupting traffic.

  • Waka Kotahi cannot offer crossings of the Remutaka Hill during the maintenance closures unless a traveller has special circumstances and has booked for one of three time slots available:
    • Hutt to Featherston 10.30pm
    • Featherston to Hutt 11.30pm
    • Hutt to Featherston 12.30am
  • The amount of work taking place makes unplanned crossings unsafe to manage – for both workers and road users. Any travellers with special circumstances should contact customer@wta.nzta.govt.nz. Otherwise we regret that travellers turning up without a booking will be turned away.
  • Waka Kotahi will remain in contact with Emergency Services to ensure we can prepare for safe passage of ‘flashing light’ vehicles. Please note there might be a short delay after 1am as machinery needs to be moved.
  • More information about the closures can be found at www.nzta.govt.nz/remutaka or email remutaka@nzta.govt.nz

Waka Kotahi understands the closure may inconvenience some road users and thanks them for their patience and understanding as crews carry out this essential work.

Regular users of this route are encouraged to stay up to date on upcoming closures at www.nzta.govt.nz/remutaka or email remutaka@nzta.govt.nz
